A poem by Yamila Mercado, ESOL level 5, Summer 2018
America
I look at you, I look at you and I look at you again I smile, I call and I cry Everything seems like a dream A relief, an illusion, a sigh I arrived! I look again I do not think so It's America The America of Dreams, Of the children of happy faces. I think and I say it will be Real Way, I cross the street The traffic light stops me Ask me if I have a green card For my dreams I answer that I don't know of colors, status or races, I walk a little more I stand in front of a local He says it looks for Assistant |
I enter, I carry a portfolio Full of golden cartons, They ask me if I have a blue card, I tell him I don't know of colors, status or races I walk a little more, I begin to wonder, If it was in the correct path Or if I'm wrong on the way Suddenly, I begin to surround myself with people, In the same situation as me I begin to discover new horizons, New roads, new dreams And I understood that The sun of hope shines Even in the gray days You're not alone You will always find a Friendly hand |

A Testimonial
Julian Camilo Peña Delgado, a level 2 student in the Spring 2018 ESOL classes, writes of his experience at Community Impact:
When I came to this country, I was very happy to have come to a famous place called the capital of the world where lot of movies were filmed. I tried to visit famous landmarks that I watched in television. I was surprised when I understood that I already started to belong to a community that wakes up earlier and go to sleep later, a community to walks faster and where the days seems to have more hours and the hours more minutes. It had a big impact on me, to understand what was happening around myself specifically about communication; there were lot of written information about streets’ names, subway’ stations, etc but everything was written in a different language than Spanish. I realized, I was trying to belong a different community that transforms daily. Due to that, I made the decision to start learning English. With my wife and brother’s help I found the wonderful opportunity to apply for free classes in Community Impact, and as the name itself describes, those classes have had a strong impact on me, as a person, as a member of a community and as an immigrant. Community Impact might looks as a school, but I feel I should call it a family. Because they are a wonderful group of selfless people, always open to share knowledge to people that we are looking for communicating, learning and sometimes advices for facing big challenges like learning a new language. Really I feel many gratitude with Community Impact, because I think that theirs supervisors took the time enough for evaluated each curriculum and they put to our service the best teachers, no only for teach me the topics planned or proposed in a book but also for guided me and made me available for put my grain of sand in this new community. It's unbelievable how they give me tools daily about how I can belong to my community with advice like how I can recycle, how I can send a letter or postal, what are the rules of behavior in the community and how they understanding each one student. I'm very Happy for to be a student of Community Impact and I take advantage for say thanks very much for your patience with me and also congratulate for your effort and dedication.
