Subin Cai: Grandfather Saves the Day!
I have an unforgettable memory from my childhood. My grandfather has been dead for many years, but every time I think of him, he seems to be right in front of my eyes. When I was young, I didn’t grow up well enough. I often had colds and fevers sometimes reaching over 39 degrees celsius. One day, when I lived in my grandfather’s house, I had a bad cold and a high fever because in the countryside there was no doctor or medicine. I remember it was the summer of 1953, and I was six years old. At that time, I had a high fever and felt so anxious that grandmother could not help it. Suddenly, my grandfather sat next to me asked, "Poor child what do you want to eat?" My answer: "eat potatoes! My goodness! It is the time when potatoes bloom and grow. Where are the ripped potatoes?" My grandfather stood up and said to me, "let me find it." Not long after my grandfather held in both hands a few white potatoes. He picked some cucumbers too and gave me fried shredded potatoes in big plate. I ate everything and felt comfortable. My fever went away! For several years I was gradually better. My beloved grandfather will always be in my memory.
