Candida Carrasco: Memories of My Childhood
Childhood is one of the most wonderful times in life because it is the time of innocence, where we start learning something new every day. I was born in the Dominican Republic, a beautiful island in the Caribbean Sea. When I was a child, I lived in the countryside with my parents, my grandma, four brothers, and three sisters. I keep inside of my heart many memories of those times, some memories are happy and others are sad.
I remember the big house where I grew up, it was like a farm because we have all kinds of domestic animals. I remember that we had dogs, a cat, goats, cows, pigs, horses, a donkey, hens, and ducks. I really enjoyed taking care of them. I remember reading my bible at Sunday school, and praying to God before going to sleep.
I remember the sound of the dried corn in a bowl as my mother shook it to bring in all the chickens and grab one or two to be cooked. I remember the sound of the mosquitoes at sunset, the smell of the roasted coffee in the morning, and my grandma preparing breakfast before we go to school. I remember the smell of frying fish and tostones on the beach.
I remember playing in the yard full of fruit trees. Running down the hill on a palm frond. I remember that I bathed in the stream and in the rain. I remember celebrating Christmas with my family and neighbors, eating delicious foods, opening the gifts, throwing fireworks, and dancing merengue and bachata.
I also have sad memories. When I was nine years old, my step-brother died. Another sad memory was when I took a branch from a tree. On the branch was a honeycomb wasp and it bit me all over my face. The next day I was blind because my eyes and face were swollen. I couldn’t take care of myself for one week. But thank God my family helped me.
All the memories of my childhood both happy and sad, are equally important to me. They are part of my life experience and my culture. They make me who I am today.

Saw Myat Sandar Win: Memories as a Child
I REMEMBER...
when I was a child playing and singing in the rain with my friends happily.
I remember reading books by the tree and playing there sometimes.
I remember when my mother would make us Mont Hin Gar (Burmese style noodles). I ate three plates of them as I loved the taste so much.
I remember watching TV with my family and talking about the movie every night after dinner.
I remember playing in front of my house with my sister and my friends under the moonlight.
I remember going to my aunty’s house every holiday and playing with my cousin.
I remember when it thundered and rained outside, my siblings and I would talk and play on the bed by covering the blankets.
I remember when my mother gave birth to my youngest brother. I would love him as my own son.
I remember I loved drawing and to become an artist was my childhood dream.

Cindy Wang Yiming: Time to Be a Big Girl
My childhood was unforgettable.
When I was seven years old, I went to elementary school every day. I had a lot of good times with my classmates. My parents took good care of me. I didn’t need to care about food, clothes, or other things. I was very happy in those days. But one day, my mother told me that she wouldn't pick me up after school. I was afraid of going home alone, so I started to cry and I was angry with my mother. Although I insisted that she and my father should protect me safely, they disagreed with me. They thought it was good for me to learn to be independent. The next day after class, I had to take a bus to go back home. I forgot to see the bus route when I got on. Therefore, when the bus was more and more far from my home, I felt anxious. Finally, I got the last stop, and then took the same bus back home.
When I told my parents my story, they never thought it was a mistake. On the contrary, they thought it was a useful experience. From then on, I didn't let them meet me after school any more.

Youssef Kabbouch: Childhood Memories
I remember when I was young - I remember it like it was yesterday - I had a good time with my family. Every day was more interesting than the last.
I remember when I was six, I was so excited because it was time to start my first class in school. I remember when I was young every boy I would meet that was my age became my friend. I remember I enjoyed playing with my friends.
I remember I waited every day for my dad to come home from work. He would bring candy for me and we would watch TV together. I remember how much I miss walking with my dad in the park because we enjoyed walking together.
I remember when I finished studying every summer I would go to my grandfather’s house in a small town next to the beach. I remember my grandfather took us to the farming fields, where he grew fruits and vegetables. We used to pick the fruits off the trees and eat them.

Abbe Kottia: I Remember ...
When I was a child, I remember hitting my friends of the same age.
I remember being hated by all the moms in the neighborhood for that.
I remember I liked hunting red head margouillat.
I remember my father hitting me and I got sick.
I remember what caused my father's anger.
I remember disrespecting my sisters and I poured out the family dinner.
I remember spending my holiday in the village.
I remember my mother's giving me candy and an egg every morning before taking me to school.
I remember my mother's promise to me to study in France after high school.
When I was young, I started a job and married. I remember my mom's promise.
I swore to myself to realize it for my children, which pushed me to be in the United State because my mother had a dream in me.
