My life very changed, my husband can’t found job 6 months, all events was cancel and my clients did cancels their appointments. I continue work as an esthetician in the medical spa, but the medical office maybe will close and I don’t know that will we do. I try don’t to panic and to do focus that improves my work skills and English, but it gets harder to do. I always wear mask and to do social distances with people, it helps me to stay healthy.

Covid-19 is a viral disease that has appalled the whole world. Because of its seriousness, due to its rapid spread, almost all countries are compelled to resort to confinement to limit the propagation of the virus but mostly to cut the transmission chain.
Covid-19 has an impact on the economy with millions of jobs lost. It mostly impacted social life with a change in our behaviors and our relationships with our neighbors.
It is exceedingly difficult for my family mostly for my kids to go through the quarantine. They cannot go to school. Although they take online classes they are separated from their friends and are basically confined inside four walls. Sometimes when I ask them to go out to take a walk they are scared because of the germs.
This is also hard for me the more so that all my plans are jeopardized. I thought that I would stick to my plans and finish my English courses, get the credits I needed and begin to focus on what I want to do. I am stuck home. On the other hand, I am fortunate to be part of the ESOL Program, which has allowed me to study remotely. These classes help me to improve my English and I am grateful for that in these uncertain times.
At the beginning of the pandemic it was very difficult not to shake hands and avoid the hugs. This sometimes causes discomfort between neighbors as if you were avoiding them. Personally, I have seen many relatives and friends lose their jobs. Some of them went on working online and others went back to work after the quarantine.
It is true that there is no vaccine now, but I believe we can survive this pandemic by continuing to respect social distancing and wear masks when we go outside.

New Yorkers had to live through difficult times due to the pandemic. The covid 19 virus spread through the world in a short time. Most countries closed their frontiers and adopted different strategies in order to keep their population safe.
From March until May, most New York City residents were locked down. Due to covid 19, most people were obligated to stay at home for around three months. During those months, the situation turned chaotic; the families were confined at home, the schools closed, the business stopped, the transportation closed, the hospitals working at their maximum capacity, the lack of supplies, the mask shortage. The schools started virtual teaching. The businesses opted for work from home at least those that were possible. Only the businesses considered essential were open.
With this situation, the economy was going down. Some people, especially the immigrants, were the most affected group. Due to their status they didn’t qualify for some benefits that the government gave to the American population. While the population was desperate without work, the authorities asked for the cooperation of the people staying at home. Staying at home all time was so stressful.
The first days in my home we took as a time to relax, like a vacation at home with the whole family. We cooked some of our favorite foods, talked with relatives in other places, watched movies. But, when we watched the news, it was distressing, because the positive cases were rising and the number of deaths increased everyday. That was an unbelievable situation.
In June, when the deaths were decreasing, some businesses reopened, the people came back to their jobs. Now most people live in an uncertain time, waiting for a vaccine, which would be very useful. Meanwhile we have to continue with the recommendations of the healthy authorities to avoid being infected.
Finally, it would be very necessary that the whole of humanity become aware of the seriousness and dangerousness of the sickness and the risk that it represents when we don’t cooperate with the suggestions of the authorities. Only by helping each other we can move forward.

My husband and I moved to New York on December 1st, because my husband got a new job. We were very excited to explore all the neighbors in NYC, to meet new people, new restaurants and new places every day. We started to do that, we started to go to a new museum every Friday to try to go to all the museums in the city, also to a new restaurant after the museum, everything was great. We started to adapting to the city, to walked a lot (we sold our car before moving), until March 17th, 2020.
I remember that day, because I was working in the store ZARA, and everything started to feel weird in the city, less people on the streets, in the store, so that day our manager told us if we wanted to go early, and I decided to go. My next business day was Friday, but they called to tell me that the store will be close until further notice. By that day, my husband had been working from home for two weeks, because his company was from China and they took precautions before everything started in United States.
I remember feeling weird to go outside and see the empty streets. For those days, it was still not mandatory to wear masks, but I tried to enter to one store and they would not let me in without a mask, at that moment I felt that something serious was happening. In the next days all the restaurants, cinemas, stores, etc., were closed, in all the news we only heard about the coronavirus, the deaths and that we can’t travel, and the best decision it was stay at home.
At the beginning it was great for me and my husband, because we got a lot of time to be together, to talk, to watch tv, to cook together. But after a few weeks I started to feeling a little stressed because I love to go out, I love to discover new places every day, I wasn’t able to do any of that. Also, I continued looking for a job, because my job in Zara was only temporary. I started to read more (in English), I watched and finish a lot of tv shows from my country, I really enjoy the American television, but I love Mexican tv shows and movies. Also, I started to cook desserts, and I bought some classes for barre.
It was good, after a few months when the things started to improve, my husband and I decided to go out and walking a lot every day. We live very close to Central Park, we decided to explore a different place of the park every day. It was nice, Central Park is amazing and you can see a new thing every day.
After all the difficulties, I think my husband and I were lucky to be able to spent the pandemic at home, we shared a lot of things together that we forgot in the last year, we learn new things about each other, I think we ended up loving each other more. Also, in July I received the news that I had been accepted in a job that I applied as an economist, it was one of the happiest days for me this year, after spent more than a year applying for jobs in my profession.
I learned to value everything more, and now every time I have the opportunity, I go out to eat, to know a new place and I really enjoy every day more than ever.

Norbey Quintero: Pandemic affects our employments and lives
I used to work at Eataly and I want to briefly tell you about it. Eataly is a large Italian supermarket, where you can find restaurants, groceries, vegetables, raw pasta, fish, meat as well as other foods. When the rumors started last year in November about this pandemic, nobody at my job believed it would be like this. Everything seemed normal but we noticed that the customers were decreasing day by day starting in February and we started to see fewer people in the store. In New York City many people were going back to their countries and people who were in the city were scared, because of the coronavirus, to leave their homes to buy food. This of course affected our sales and then my manager decided to curtail some hours of our work until one day the boss made the decision not to continue to give the opportunity to many of us. They only needed a couple of employees to cover some areas, so several coworkers including me were furloughed in March.
I know this pandemic is affecting everyone around the world. For instance, in my country people stayed at home for a couple of months with many restrictions because government ordered a mandatory quarantine for everyone. Recently merchants are going outside to strike for their rights due to the fact they aren’t earning money because all their businesses were closed and they currently haven’t received any economic support from our president. So, it´s very difficult for my people since most of them depend on their small or informal businesses.

Life is isolated and distancing can be very hard for everybody. Lockdowns and quarantines around the world are shutting down businesses, school, public transportation and more. Our contribution to society, our way of helping this situation, is to stay home and not get sick and spread the virus. So while I did my part, I utilized this extra time to focus my self and discovered something new.
I stayed at home and practiced social distancing for my parents. They are old and at-risk category because my father has diabetes. I tell myself that this is the time to concentrate on doing something useful. At first, I was sitting on my bed and thinking about my life as it is once was. Sometimes, I was watching Netflix, scrolling through social media and playing video games the whole day. As a result, I became weak both mentally and physically. Moreover, I started to have headaches and body aches. At that time, my father advised me to do meditation. In the beginning, it was difficult to control my mind. However, I started with five minutes and worked myself up. A few week later, my mind was clear and I started to feel at peace. There is no doubt that meditation can help improve the symptoms of headaches and then the disease is gone. Hence, I made it part of my daily routine and took an hour to meditate. I gained the benefit of meditation and since then, I decided to do it every day.
There is a lot of we can do, and a lot of time to do it during quarantine. If you are happy watching movies and social media all the time, then do it. However, if you want to try new things and makes the most of this quarantine, I would suggest going for meditation. Among the things I have done during quarantine, mediation is the most beneficial activity. Since then, I have decided to meditate the rest of my life.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed my life considerably. I lived in Switzerland during the first wave in March and with my husband, we supposed to go to New York in April 2020 but the borders were closed. We are French and we couldn’t return in France neither, see our family and friends due to the lockdown.
During the last year, we spent our time to organize our departure and our move to New York, initially planned for April, also this situation was very difficult for because our plan was totally different. We have to wait this summer for moving and the atmosphere was so special, nobody in the airport and in the plane and a lot of instructions to follow. It was a real relief to achieve living here despite the situation in the world.
But the good change is the quality time spend together. Before the COVID19, our life summarized to work and no social life. Now, we appreciate the time and we took the time to call our family and friends more than before.
I hope the borders will reopen soon in order to welcome our family here and give them the opportunity to discover New York.
Also, it permits to really appreciate the value of everything and appreciate this precious time.
